يُمكن اعتبار رواية "ليبيديس" لــ "غيورغ كلاين" نوع من النقد الأيديولوجي الذي يوصف بالإجتماعي تارة، وبالنقد الواقعي تارة أخرى، وبكلام آخر هي نوع من القراءة السوسيولوجية للأدب والقراءة البنيوية، التي تصف الشرق بعيون الغرب ويفعل ذلك كلاين من خلال متخيل روائي لمدينة شرقية يعيش فيها جاسوس ألماني "سبايك" برفقة ابنته.
وتبدأ أولى مشاهد الرواية بقلق الروائي، وهو الجاسوس الألماني سبايك، خلال إنتظاره وصول بديل له يحل محله في هذه المدينة الشرقية التي تكره الغربيين، ولا يستطيع سكانها التحرك بحرية في أحيانها الداخلية نظراً للوضع الأمني، ولكن المفاجأة أن هذا البديل الذي ينتظره سبايك جاء لقتله وليس فقط لخلافته، حيث تعتمد المخابرات الألمانية أن سبايك خرج عن مسار مهمته، وأصبحت معلوماته مثيرة للشك، كما أنه فقد القدرة على إدراك الأمور.
أما معمار المدينة التي تحمل اسم "ليبيديسي" فقد أضفى مسحته الخاصة هو الآخر على خصوصيتها، فهو من الطين الأزرق، ويخترق المدينة نهر، والأبنية متشابهة إلى درجة تصعب على الجاسوس تميز الشوارع، وأما أهل المدينة فيعتبرونه نصف سائح وهي صفة تجعل مهمته صعبة، وقد باءت محاولاته المستميتة لفهم ما يدور حوله والتماهي معه إلى تحلل شخصيته هو، وفقدانه البوصلة والقدرة على أداء المهمة وتنتهي الرواية بنفي المخابرات الألمانية لــ "سبايك"...
