عاش المؤلف عمر الزهرة, عمر الفراشة, وقبل أن يتوارى مع النور جمع ما في أعماقه من ألوان وأحاسيس, من عواطف ومعانٍ, ألف منها باقة هي التي يضمها هذا الديوان. الشعر الخالص, الشعور المحض, تطفو فوقه وبين ثناياه موجة من الكآبة, كآبة الفراشة تتوقع مصيرها فتلقي على الحياة نظرة فيها حب الحياة, كل الحياة بمشاغلها وهمومها, بأحزانها ومباهجها, حياة تذهب مع الريح, ولكنها تعرف أن في الإنسان ما هو أكثر من الحياة. وهذا الفائض هو سر الحياة: كلمة تسير وأثر يدل. هدية غنية بتواضعها يقدمها قبل رحيله الشاعر: الى الشعر, الى من يحب الشعر, فالحياة شعر.
ولد عبد السلام عام 1922، التحق طالباً في الكلية الشرعية في حلب, عمل موظفاً في الإنتاج الزراعي, ثم في وزارة المالية. تزوج في بدء شبابه ومات وعنده ثلاثة أولاد, في العشرين من عمره بدأ بكتابة الشعر الذي كان تقليدياً ثم أصبح ذا مدرسة متميزة.
