رواية "الذين يحبون الشوك" هي بوح شخصي، وقصة صراع ثقافي. ويبدو أن القضية المركزية في الرواية، زواجٌ غير سعيد بين شخصين لا يمتّعان بعضهما جنسياً، ويشعران بحيرة مضنية حول ما يجب فعله. إنها تحمل طابع السيرة الذاتية. لأنها تحكي انبهار الكاتب المتزايد بمدينة أوساكا واليابان التقليدية.
غير أن الموضوع الحقيقي لرواية "الذين يحبون الشوك" هو الصراع بين القديم والجديد، بين المستورد والمحلي. الصراع المادي والصراع الثقافي يتناوبان معاً بوجه عام. ميساكو، الزوجة، مأخوذة بكل ما هو أجنبي وجديد، وزوجها كانيم منجذب أكثر فأكثر لكل ما هو تقليدي. مع ذلك، كلّ منهما تتناهبه قوى متصارعة. ميساكو هي المرأة الشابة الأنيقة التي تمثّل المستقبل، لكننا نعرف أنها ليست واثقة من نفسها وفي نهاية الكتاب يعلق والدها بحكمة أنّ الحداثة "قشرة رقيقة جداً". أما كانيم، من جهته، فيصبو إلى دفن اضطراباته العاطفية من خلال الاندماج الهادئ بالطريقة اليابانية القديمة في الحياة، على الرغم من انجذابه إلى لويز. وإذا كان لا بد من الطلاق، فإنّ ذلك سيعمل لصالح كانيم أكثر مما يعمل لصالح ميساكو، بالرغم من الأزمات التي ستواجه كانيم لاحقاً.
