صاحب هذا الكتاب هو تقي الدين، أبو التقى، أبو بكر بن عبدالله محمد بت أحمد بن عبدالله الوفاني، ويعرف بأن البدري كان والده يعرف بجمال الدين الديمشقي، القاهري، الشافعي، الشاعر وكان ينتمي إلى بني الشحنة بحلب. ولد سنة 847 هجري في دمشق ونشأ وتلقى أوائل علومه، ثم تكرر قدومه مع أبيه إلى القاهرة. وطاب له المقام فيها فاستوطنها، وأخذ يدور على الشيوخ الكبار يأخذ عنهم. ونظم الشعر فمدح وهجا وطارح الشعراء والفضلاء. وكان يتردد إلى السخاوي، يأخذ منه ويمدحه بشعره، ويكتب من مصنفاته ويلازمه في الحقل رواية ودراية. ترك ابن البدري عدة مؤلفات منها مؤلفه الذي نقلب صفحاته "نزهة الأنام في محاسن الشام" ورغم أن الكتب التي ألفت في فضائل الشام هي كثيرة، الا أن ابن البدري تميز في ذكره لمحاسن وجماليات الشام تاريخياً ومحاريا وحضارياً وجمالياً وزراعياً، من ًخلال كتابه هذا والشام عنده تعني دمشق وحدها، لأنها عن بلاد الشام، كما يطلق المصريون على القاهرة: مصر. قام المؤلف بوصف بردى وفروعه وصفاء مائه، والنواعير المنتصبة عليه، والأزهار والخضار والفواكه والثمار المزروعة في بساتين دمشق مستشهداً على ذلك بالكثير من الأبيات الشعرية المملوكية، وذاكراً خصائصها الطبية. وأنهى المؤلف كتابه بذكر من توفي في دمشق من الصالحين ولأهمية الكتاب تم الإعتناء به حيث عمد المحقق إلى عزو الأبيات الشعرية إلى أصحابها. كما قام بتوثيق ما جاءت معلومات في الحواشي وبترجمة للإعلام وبتصويب لبعض الأخطاء إلى ما هنالك من أعمال التحقيق حتى جاءت هذه الطبعة كأول طبعة علمية يصدر بها هذا الكتاب بتحقيق دقيق ومتأن.
