تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى البحث والتحليل في القراءة المعاصرة للتراث ونقدها. إذ أننا حين نقرأ التراث علينا أن نقرأه بعين ناقدة لا بعين التقديس لأن هذه هي الطريقة الوحيدة التي يمكن أن نجعل من خلالها التراث معاصراً لنا.
وقد حاول الباحث في هذا الكتاب أن يبين تداخل الجدل في البرهان في منظومة ابن رشد الفلسفية فضلاً عن تداخل البرهان بالعرفان. وحاول أيضاً أن يبين اختلاف ابن رشد عن أرسطو في الكثير من المباحث الفلسفة خاصة في مسالة قدم العالم أو الأحداث المستمرة والله والتأويل وعلاقة الحكمة بالشريعة.
وفي قراءته للتراث الرشدي وجد المؤلف أن أغلب هذه القراءات حاولت أن تقرأ هذا الفكر -الرشدي- في محاول منها لموضعة ما أسماه القراءة الفلسفة العربية المعاصرة. حيث حصر هذه القراءات في اتجاهات ثلاثة الاتجاه الأول يمثله أصحاب القراءة العلمانية، الاتجاه الثاني ويمثله أصحاب القراءة الدينية، بينما تمثل القراءة الابستيمولوجية الاتجاه الثالث. وقد وجد أن هذه القراءات المتعددة تصب في قراءة واحدة وهي قراءة تهدف إلى بناء فكر عربي مستقل يحمل ملامح ثقافتنا العربية الماضية ولا يفقد صلته بالحاضر.
