يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه: "فالمقصد من هذا الكتاب، بيان رياضة أخلاق النفس جملة وتفصيلاً، وبيان كيفيتها... ولما كانت النفس بهواها مشغوفة، وعلى أبوابها موقوفة، رأيت إحياء هذا الجنس من مهمات الدين، وما أريد إلا الإصلاح ما استطعت".
وقد قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى قسمين، سمى الأول منه بكتاب الآداب، أودعه جملة من الآداب العامة التي يجب أن يتحلى بها المسلم في حياته اليومية، كلها تصب في فضائل الأعمال وتزكيتها، وفي إصلاح النفس وتنقيتها.
أما القسم الثاني، فسماه بكتاب الأخلاق، حشد فيه مجموعة كبيرة من الأخلاق رتبها وفق ترتيب الحروف الهجائية، تنشيطاً للراغب وتسهيلاً للطالب، ذاكراً لكل خلق ماهيته وسببه وعلاجه.
وقد أفرغ المؤلف فيه من النصائح والإرشادات والمواعظ، وأخلص القول والبيان والتوجيه، في جمل واضحة المعاني.
