أقام الإمام الحسين في مكة المكرمة منذ اليوم الثالث من شعبان إلى اليوم الثامن من ذي الحجة من نفس السنة، أي ما لا يقل عن مائة وخمسة وعشرين يوماً، وهي فترة طويلة نسبياً في إطار حساب عمر النهضة الحسينية المباركة، غير أن هذه الفترة برغم طولها تعتبر الفترة المجهولة من عمر هذه النهضة المباركة إذا قورنت مع فتراتها الأخرى من حيث الوقائع والأحداث التي سجلها التاريخ عنها، ذلك لأن كتب التأريخ مرت على هذه الفترة المكية مرور الكرام، فعدا وقائع أيام ما قبيل خروج الإمام عليه السلام من مكة التي حظيت بنوع من العناية التأريخية التفصيلية، نلاحظ أن التأريخ لم يسجل عن بقية هذه الأيام المكية الطويلة إلا ملاحظات عامة هي أقرب إلى الغموض منها إلى الوضوح.
