يعدّ العصر المملوكي بين أهم عصور التاريخ العربي-الإسلامي، غذ فيه تمّت الصياغة شبه النهائية للأوضاع الاجتماعية والنظم الاقتصادية والسياسية والعمرانية للمشرق العربي. ولذلك فموضوع الأوضاع الاجتماعية والاقتصادية في النيابات المملوكية، خلال العصر المملوكي (1250-1517) موضوع مهم جداً لأنه يرتبط بجذور المجتمعات الخالية من المشرق.
هذا الكتاب هو محاولة في دراسة التاريخ الاجتماعي، الإداري، العمراني والاقتصادي لنيابة طرابلس، إحدى وحدات الإدارة المملوكية، التي كانت تضم الأجزاء الساحلية في شمال سوريا ولبنان الحاليين ويشرف عليها من مرتفعات جبلية. هذا وقد قسم الباحث دراسته إلى فصول عدة راعى فيها التقسيم الكلاسيكي. فكان الفصل الأول بمثابة مقدمة عامة مطولة مهد فيه لنيابة طرابلس، بوضع النقاط الأساسية للإطار الجغرافي، ثم عالج مسألة الفتوحات المملوكية التي طرد الصليبين تدريجياً وتكوين نيابة طرابلس. في الفصل الثاني درس المجتمع. وقد حاول الوصول فيه إلى اكتشاف ديموغرافيا مدينة طرابلس وباقي أرجاء النيابة. في الفصل الثالث دراسة الإدارة في نيابة طرابلس. وفي الفصل الرابع تناول مسألة تطور العمران في العاصمة طرابلس من جهة وفي النيابة ككل من جهة أخرى، في الفصل الخامس والأخير كانت له إطلالة على المناخ الاقتصادي الذي وضعت فيه نيابة طرابلس خلال عقدين من الزمن ونيف سواء على صعيد الأوبئة والأثاث والعوارض البشرية والجدية وحركة العملة. وقد حاول الكشف عن وضعية الزراعة ومصاعبها ووضعية الصناعة ومشاكلها، وأخيراً كانت له جولة مع التجارة البحرية ومشاغلها.
