ولذلك فأول أغراض هذا الكتاب تقديم هذه النظريات بلغة مبسطة ليقرأها أولئك الراغبون في معرفة تلك النظريات ولا يستطيعون قراءتها في ثوبها الرياضي المعقد. ولدينا في القرن العشرين نظريتان علميتان عملاقتان، هما نظرية الكوانتم ونظرية النسبية. وحين يقدم عمالقة العلماء اكتشافاتهم الخطيرة يسرع إليها علماء آخرون يطبقونها في حياتنا العملية فيخرجون علينا بالتكنولوجيا المعاصرة التي نحيا في ظلها، كما يسرع إليها الفلسفة يتناولونها بالفحص، والمناقشة ليستنبطوا منها نتائج قد تنير لهم السبيل في حل المشكلات الفلسفية. لكن قد يحدث أن يقوم العالم المكتشف نفسه باستخراج النتائج الفلسفية لنظريته العلمية. مما يدلنا على أن كبار العلماء ليسوا غرباء عن التفكير الفلسفي.
ولقد سجل المؤلف في هذا الكتاب بعض النتائج الفلسفية التي خرج بها أصحاب النظريتين العلميتين المعاصرتين، والتي تؤكد على أن: الكون مؤلف من حوادث لا من أشياء، مشكلة الذاتية والموضوعية في معرفة الإنسان: هل المعرفة الموضوعية المطلقة ممكنة، أم أن كل معرفة-حتى العلمية الدقيقة-يداخلها عناصر ذاتية، مشكلة العلمية والحتمية: هل لكل شيء علمه أم أنه توجد حوادث صدفة؟ وهل يخضع كل شيء لقانون صارم أم في العالم شواهد على العبث، مشكلة أهل الكون: هل هو قديم لا أول له، أم حادث له بداية؟ وهل مآله إلى فناء، أم قائم لا نهاية له؟ هذه مشكلة طرقها أولئك العلماء وأوجز المؤلف في كتابه هذا موقفهم العلمي منها، وقارنه بمواقف الفلاسفة السابقين.
