كما معظم الدول والمجتمعات، تركيا هي مجموعة من خصائص، تاريخية وجغرافية وإقليمية ودولية، ومجتمعية وايديولوجية. وتشكل معرفة هذه الخصائص، أو معظمها بعض المداخل نحو فهم تركيا والمجتمع التركي، وحركتها الداخلية والخارجية.
والمؤلف في هذا الكتاب يحاول رصد هذه الخصائص في محاولة لفهم تركيا وذلك بهدف إيجاد نقطة تقارب بينها وبين جيرانها العرب، لأنه، وكما يقول الباحث، إذا كان لكل شعب حريته في تحديد خياراته التي يرى أنها تناسبه، إلا أن الدول والمجتمعات ليست حرة في اختيار جيرانها بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإنه وإذا كان الاستعمار، بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى قد نجح في زرع بذور الشقاق والشكوك المتبادلة، بل حتى العداء، بين العرب والأتراك، فإنه من الخطأ استمرار تبرئة الذات، عندنا وعند الأتراك، من مسؤوليتنا حيال البحث عن أفضل السبل للتواصل فيما بيننا، بعيداً عن العواطف وذكريات الماضي.
