تمثل المجموعتان "جنائن آدم" و"طائر آخر يتوارى"، اللتان تشكلان صلب هذا الديوان، أقول تمثلان في الواقع عملاً واحداً مكتملاً، قصائد متلاحمة كتبها عقيل علي في مدينته -الأم "الناصرية"، في جنوب العراق، وسط موجة م ن الاحتدام الشعري دامت سنتين (1978 و1979). تفضيل الناشرين مجاميع متواضعة الحجم هو ما دفع إلى تجزئة القصائد إلى مجموعتين لدى نشرهما لأول مرة. بعد كتابة عمله هذا، التزم عقيل الصمت طيلة سنوات عديدة. القصائد الجديدة التي أرسلها هو قبل رحيله بفترة إلى الشاعر خالد المعالي تبدد إلى حد ما مقولة الصمت هذه. وبمثول أشعار عقيل هذه في مجلد واحد، متبوعة بقصائده غير المنشورة من قبل، ما يساعد القارئ على متابعة مسيرته في اكتمالها وتسارعها وكثافتها. كما أن المعطيات المتوفرة عن حياة الشاعر تعرب هي الأخرى عن سعي دائب لتحويل الحياة نفسها إلى مراس شعري، وذلك بصيغة سأعود إليها بتفصيل أكثر.
