هذا الكتاب هو دليل للمخطوطات العربية الموجودة في مكتبة الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت والبالغ عددها 1991 مخطوطة: منها 1053 مخطوطة مصنفة حسب نظام ديوي العشري لتصنيف الكتب وتنسيقها (هذا ما عدا الــ 25 مخطوطة التي حذفت لأنها باللغات التركية والفارسية والكرشونية)، و191مخطوطة غير مصنفة (هذا ما عدا المخطوطات الخمس التي حذفت لأنها باللغة التركية)، و248 مخطوطة مصورة على الفوتوستات والثرموفاكس، و499 مخطوطة مصورة على الميكروفيلم (هذا ما عدا الــ42 ميكروفيلما التي حذفت لأنها لكتب مطبوعة و49 رقماً لا مكيروفيلمات لها لأنها كانت قد أعطيت سابقاً لدوريات وحذفت عندما أعطيت الدوريات أرقاماً مستقلة خاصة بها.
ولقد رتبت المخطوطات العربية المصنفة والمخطوطات المصورة على الفوتوستات والثرموفاكس حسب نظام ديوي العشري لتصنيف الكتب وتنسيقها، بينما رتبت المخطوطات غير المصنفة، والمخطوطات المصورة على الميكروفيلم حسب تسلسل أرقامها.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك ذكر في مادة كل مخطوط ما يلي: "اسم الكتاب"، "اسم المؤلف"، "عدد الأوراق"، "نوع الورق"، "الوصلة"، "حجم الورقة"، "الحيز المكتوب على الورقة"، "عدد الأسطر في كل ورقة"، "قاعدة الخط"، "الناسخ وتاريخ النسخ"، "أول المخطوط"، "آخر المخطوط"، "بعض المميزات"، "اسم الكتاب المشروح ومؤلفه في حال كان المخطوط شرحاً"، "المراجع"، "اسم المكتبة أو المصدر الذي حصل منه المخطوط"، "رقم التصنيف حسب نظام ديوي العشري لتصنيف الكتب وتنسيقها"، "رقم المخطوط السابق في مكتبة الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت قبل تصنيفه".
