في ظل الحداثة، وانطلاقاً من القول أنه ليس على المسلمين الذوبان في الحداثة الغربية لمواكبتها، بل لا كيان يكون إلا بكون المرء ذاته، هذا الطرح إذن هو أن الإسلام ليس شيئاً من الماضي، وأنه نموذج مجتمعي يصلح اليوم كما يصلح في الماضي، بل إنه النموذج الصالح لأي مجتمع إسلامي. يحاول الكتاب من خلال عدة مواضيع إثبات هذا القول بإظهار المشكلات التي يثيرها ما يسمى بالعالم الحديث، وإظهار قدرة الإسلام على تقديم الحل لها. هذا في الفصل الأول. وأما الفصل الثاني فقد حاول من خلال موضوع الإسلام والعلمانية إظهار العيوب التي تشوب النموذج المنافس الذي يدعي أن لديه الحلول الأكثر ملاءمة للمشكلات الراهنة في المجتمعات البشرية، والغاية من وراء ذلك تحقيق القول بأن الحل الإسلامي هو الأفضل.
