"معجم الباقلاني" عنوان لكتاب جمع كلمات الباقلاني في مصطلحات خاصة به عبرت عن فكره الجامع، وهو الذي تبع فرقة إسلامية جعلت من نفسها وسطاً بين أهل النقل وأهل العقل، وحاولت الخروج بأسلوب كلامي يكون حجة على الخصوم تدفع فيه المخالفين منهم عن الدين. فهو يحاول تخطي الإشكالات التي وقعت فيها الفرق الأخرى من فلاسفة ومعتزلة، هذا الإشكال الذي حل مع الفلسفة الإشراقية فيما بعد، كل حل مع الفلسفة المسيحية في القرون الوسطى.
إن في كتب الباقلاني الثلاثة أكثر من خمسمائة مصطلح كانت مادة لتأليف هذه الكتب، وصياغتها، وقد جمعتها وأحصيتها بعد أن أعدتها إلى الجذر الثلاثين ثم استعملت منها 384 مصطلحاً كانت مادة أساسية في بناء "المعجم". هذا العدد من المصطلحات خرج عنه عدد من المشتقات قاربت 1226 مشتقاً، وبذلك يكون عدد الكلمات التي بني عليها المعجم 1610 كلمات أو مفردات معظم مصلحاتها ذو ضد أو نقيض أو خلاف.
