في العام 1999، وصل الصراع بين جيش الإحتلال الإسرائيلي والمقاومة الإسلامية في لبنان إلى ذروته. ضربات المقاومة كانت تتوالى وتتصاعد ضد جنود العدو بشكل يومي؛ مواجهات، إقتحاك مواقع وثكنات، كمائن، تفجير عبوات، قنص دبابات... إلخ، حتى أن العدو طرح حينها معادلة إيقاف إستخدام سلاح الجو، مقابل وقف إستخدام العبوات الناسفة من قبل المقاومة لكن دون جدوى.
من الأمور التي فاقمت مأزق الصهاينة في تلك الفترة، تمكَن المقاومة من تقليل خسائرها البشرية إلى الحد الأدنى، نتيجة عوامل عدة منها، البراعة في التخفي والإستتار، في مقابل إرتفاع خسائر العدو. عندها لجأت إسرائيل إلى إستراتيجية عسكرية جديدة سميت حينها بـ"العقاب والأفعى"، مفادها إستخدام سلاج الجو –وهو من الأقوى والأحدث في العالم- في تعقب ومطاردة زجال المقاومة حتى لو كان فرداً واحداً، وقصفهم بالصواريخ المتطورة، فتحوَل بذلك سلاح الجَو من قصف الأهداف الإستراتيجية والكبيرة إلى إستهداف الأفراد.
في الفترة نفسها، حصلت مواجهة بطولية في إحدى القرى الجنوبيَة المحتلة بين المقاومة والقوات الإسرائيلية، فكانت ميداناً لإختبار الإستراتيجيَة الإسرائيلية الجديدة.
حسناً فعل الكاتب حسن نعيم، بأن أعاد سرد هذه الواقعة بأسلوب فنَي خاص، مستنداً إلى ما سمعه مباشرة على لسان بطل القصَة نفسه. قصَة فيها عبرة خالدة خلود الذكر الحكيم: وما تشاؤون إلاَ أن يشاء الله رب العالمين.
