بالرغم من أنه واحد من القلائل التي تُذكر أسماؤهم في الكتب المدرسيّة، نكاد لا نعثر إلاَّ على عدد ضئيل ممن يعرفون إسهاماته في محاولة النهضة العربية تحت لواء علم عربي واحد، لا يتعارض وجوده مع رابطة تضمّ الشعوب الإسلامية، ولا يتنافى ودخول العرب في تحالفات مختلفة مع الآخرين؛ وكثير منهم لا يعرفون صيحاته التي تندد بالإستبداد، وتدعو إلى تحرير العقول من الجمود، وتطالب بضرورة الإجتهاد في الإسلام الذي وُجد من أجل السعادة الإنسان.
ولد الكواكبي عام 1855م وتنقّل بين حلب وإنطاكية لمتابعة دروسه، وكان يتقن الفارسية والتركية إلى جانب لغته الأم، إمتاز بنشأته ذات الثقافة الدينية، وتربيته العلمية، حيث تلقى علوم الشريعة والفلسفة والإقتصاد والسياسة؛ إغتالته السلطة في الرابع عشر من حزيران سنة 1902 وما تزال أفكاره حيّة لا تموت.
يأتي هذا الكتاب تتويجاً لأعمال الندوة الدولية التي أقامها اتحاد الكتاب بالتعاون مع الأمانة العامة لاحتفالية حلب عاصمة للثقافة الإسلامية، مساهمة منه في فعاليات حلب، وإيماناً بأهمية إحياء التراث لنستفيد منه في حاضرنا؛ وعلى مدى ثلاثة أيام توافد الباحثون للحديث عن الكواكبي في إطار العصر، ومفهوم الإستبداد عنده، ودعوته إلى الإصلاحات السياسية والاجتماعية التربوية والدينية، ومواقفه من العروبة والاسلام وصحافته وأساليبه فيها وأفكاره.
