"الموشى" كتاب مقسّم إلى أبواب في جزئين كلها في حدود الأدب، وشرائع المروءة، وسنن الظرف، وأزياء الظرفاء، والسواك واستعماله، وأخبار العشاق، وما يكتب من الشعر على العصائب والزنانير، والتكك، والستور، والكلل والأسرة، والقباب، والنعال، والخفاف، وما بنقش على الخواتم "من أهل الهوى وأهل الحزم" ويتخلل ذلك مواعظ، وحثّ على المصادقة والإخلاص والتعفف، فهو والحق يقال كتاب فريد في باب وأسلوبه ودقة وصفه، وتصويره لحياة الظرفاء، وضع فيه صاحبه، على حدّ قوله، "كل ما يستحسنه الظرفاء، ويميل إليه الأدباء"، فكأنما هو مجموعة أنظمة لعصبة مخصوصة من الظرفاء والظريفات يبدو منها كيف كانت عندهم حدود الأدب، وشرائع المروءة وسنن الظرف. هذا إلى وصف طريقة جلوسهم إلى موائد الطعام الشراب، وما يأكلونه ويشربونه، وما يتجنبون أكله وشربه؛ ووصف استعمالهم للسواك وسيتهم بين الناس، وأنواع طيوبهم وأسلوب مراسلاتهم ومعاتباتهم، حتى إنك لترى في هذه النظم ضرباً من الفتوة والشهامة والأناقة يوقع في ذهنك أن هؤلاء الظرفاء كانوا طليعة جماعة الفتيان، وأن نظامهم كان مقدّمة لنظام الفتوى الذي عرف في أواخر أيام العباسيين. ويظهر أن التوشية، مهنة المؤلف، قد سنّت له معرفة أزياء الذكور والإناث السائدة في أيامه، فوصفها في مختلف أنواعها، ونسيجها، وألوانها، وأسمائها وصفاً يدلّ على عمق المعرفة ونعومة وترف الذوق، فالموشَّى إذاً، تاريخ للمجتمع العباسي الأنيق في ترفه ولهوه، وهو في الوقت نفسه معجم تستطيع أن تعرف منه مختلف الأنسجة والبلدان التي تنسب إليها، وأنواع الطيب وغير ذلك مما يفيد ويتسع معه مدى الاطلاع.
