هل بالإمكان التنبؤ بالمستقبل، لا لمدة عام واحد أو عقد أو حتى قرن فحسب، وإنما لمدة خمسة قرون؟ من الوهلة الأولى فإن أي شخص يدّعي بأنه قادر على إبداء مثل هذه التنبؤات لا بد أن يكون طموحاً إلى حدّ الجنون. ومن الاستحالة عادة إدراك ما سيحدث في العام القادم، ناهيك عن أزمنة بعيدة بُعداً شاسعاً.
ولكن على الرغم من ذلك ثمة وسيلة لإعمال النظر في المستقبل أتاحت لمؤلف هذا الكتاب التنبؤ لهيئة العالم في الخمسمائة عام القادمة. غطت تنبؤات المؤلف خمسة قرون حيث فصّل كثيراً حول ما سيحدث في الحياة الأرضية في القرن القادم. فتنبأ بالنمو المتزايد للثروة وتخزين الشخصية الإنسانية على أقراص الحاسوب لاسترجاعها بعد الوفاة، كما تنبأ باستخلاف إنسان آلي ذكي لإنسان هذا العصر، وأيضاً تنبأ بزراعة البحر وبمجىء عصر جليدي ثانٍ وباستعمار القمر والمريخ والكويكبات، وأخيراً تنبأ ببناء سفن النجوم.
والمؤلف لم يتنبأ في كتابه هذا بما سيحدث في عالم الطب وفي مجال الرعاية الصحية إلا أنه سجل تنبؤاته في مجال استبدال الأجزاء المعطوبة من الجسد بما فيها العقل. وقد حاول المؤلف أن تكون تنبؤاته محصورة داخل هذه الحدود، وتحديداً في تلك الأمور التي لها أهمية عنده وذلك باعتقاده أنها ستسود حياة الأجيال القادمة.
هذا الكتاب يغطي من خلال البحث فترة القرون الخمسة القادمة التي لا يُراد أن تكون شديدة القصر، فتصير تنبؤاتها غير مؤكدة، ولا شديدة الطول فتكون عصيةً على التخيل؛ ولذا فهو يطمح أن يكون ممكناً-تقنياً-لأحفادنا، استعمار كواكب لا حصر لها، تدور حول النجوم، وإذا لم تحدث كارثة تقضي على الجنس البشري فإن فرص حدوث هذا سترتفع نحو اللانهائية مع مضي الزمان قدماً؛ حتى يتسنى للبشر أن يبحثوا عن إكسير الحياة، ليكون بإمكانهم الوصول إلى استبدال الأجزاء المعطوبة من الجسد بما فيها العقل. إن تاريخ الطموح البشري يعيد نفسه في هذا البحث، ولكن بشكل تقني حديث.
