قبل استشهاده بأيام قليلة، طلب إلى الناشر –الذي كانت تربطه به صداقة- أن يقوم بطباعة ديوانه بعد موته، وقال له: إياك أن يكون أقل حجماً أو أقل مستوى من ديوان محمود درويش أو السياب.. كان ذلك أمام أصدقاء مشتركين منهم: فريد الخطيب، ذو الفقار قبيسي، منح بك الصلح، الدكتور خليل حاوي، في "مطعم فيصل" المواجه المدخل الرئيس للجامعة الأميركية في بيروت. وسأله الناشر أن يكتب شيئاً عن تجربته الشعرية، على غرار ما طلب من سائر الشعراء الذين طبعت أعمالهم الشعرية "الكاملة". فردّ كمال: لقد كتبت مقالة بعنوان "كيف أفهم الشعر"، ومن الممكن أن تضعها بديلاً مما تطلب كونها تحقق الغرض نفسه.
...وبعد أيام استشهد كمال ناصر- مع كمال عدوان وأبو يوسف النجار- بأيدي "الكوماندوس الإسرائيلي" في محل سكنهم في شارع فردان، وقد افرغوا رصاصهم الآثم في جسده الطاهر، ثم جعلوه على شكل صليب وأطلقوا رصاصات على فمه كأنهم يقولون إنهم أسكتوه إلى الأبد.
دار العودة –من قبيل واجبها ووفاء لوعدها للشهيد- ترى أن تطبع "أعماله الشعرية الكاملة"، وقد تفضل الدكتور سهيل سليمان، بإضافة الكثير من الشعر "المجهول" "غير المطبوع" أصلاً، إلى هذه الطبعة، وبالتقديم لها باعتباره كان قد تابع أعمال الشهيد الشعرية والنثرية عبر أوسع ميادينها وأوفى مصادرها ومراجعها، وله في سيرة "كمال ناصر الإنسان والأديب والشاعر والسياسي" مؤلف واسع.
