"المسرح والهوية العربية" هو بحث في جذور وأصول المسرح عند العرب منذ القدم. يقع الكتاب في قسمين: الثاني منه فيه تاريخ موجز للمسرح العربي الحديث في الأقطار العربية كلها من المغرب إلى الخليج، هذا القسم على اختصاره يضع بين يدي القارئ صورة واضحة جلية عن تطور المسرح والتمثيليات ومؤلفها.
وبالنسبة للقسم الأول فهو الأحرى بالتحدث عنه، ذلك بأن الدكتور قاجة نقب عن كل ما حسبه مسرحاً أو عملاً مسرحياً في ثنايا الآداب والحضارات القديمة (السومرية، الفراعنة، الأكاديين، الشرق الأقصى القديم...) الوثني منها والسماوي، وناقش القضايا مناقشة علمية.
وقد حاول جهده ربط التطور المسرحي عند الشعوب التي ظهرت في منطقة الرافدين وبلاد الشام ومصر واليونان وما سوى ذلك. وكان مما رمى إليه البرهان على أن اليونان لم يكونوا هم الذين اخترعوا المسرح، ولو أنه لم ينكر عليهم تفوقهم لما انتهى الأمر إليهم، إلا أن إصراره على إنكار مؤرخي المسرح حتى السابقين لليونان يمثل فترة سابقة لدراسة التاريخ الحديث للمسرح. وثمة أمر آخر عني به المؤلف عناية خاصة هو المسرح عند العرب على اختلاف أنواعه في عصور التاريخ المختلفة.
