يضم هذا المعجم تراجم الروائيين العرب مرتبة ترتيباً ألفبائياً بحسب الحرف الأول من اسم الروائي. وقد روعي الترتيب الألفبائي نفسه في الحروف الثواني والثوالت من أسماء الروائيين، بحيث يدل الحرف الأول من اسم الروائي على الباب الذي يضم الروائيين الذين اتفقت أسماؤهم في أنها تبدأ بحرف واحد، كالهمزة أو النون... كما تدل الحروف الثواني والثوالث على ترتيب أسماء الروائيين داخل كل باب من أبواب المعدم، فـ"إبراهيم" قبل "أحمد" و"أمين" بعد "الياس"...
إن المؤلف قد قدم للباحث عوناً آخر يضاف إلى الترتيب الألفبائي، هو منح كل ترجمة من تراجم الروائيين العرب رقماً يوضع إلى يمينها. وحرص على أن تكون أرقام الروائيين متسلسلة من بداية المعجم إلى نهايته، بحيث يستطيع القارئ العودة إلى مسرد الروائيين في نهاية المعجم ليستمد منه رقم الروائي، ويبحث عن الترجمة استناداً إليه، من غير أن يضطر إلى مراعاة الترتيب الألفائي.
على أن هناك روائيين اختلفت الأسماء التي اشتهروا بها عن أسمائهم الحقيقية. وهؤلاء الروائيون نوعان: نوع ليس فيه أي علاقة بين اسم الشهرة والاسم الحقيقي للروائي، كما هي حال الروائية السورية خديجة الجراح النشواتي التي اشتهرت بـ"أم عصام". ونوع لا اختلاف فيه بين الاسم الحقيقي واسم الشهرة، غير أن الاسم الحقيقي يبدأ بـ"محمد"، في حين يخلو اسم الشهرة منه، كما هي حال الروائي المصري "محمد أبو المعاطي أبو النجا" الذي اشتهر بـ"أبو المعاطي أبو النجا".
حرص في النوعين السابقين كليهما على ترسيخ الاسم الحقيقي الكامل للروائي العربي، فأرود الترجمة بعده.
