إنّ تدرّج الروح، بالصعود إلى حيث عالمها، عالم الجمال والكمال، لمْ يكن وليد العصور الحديثة، بل هو قديم قدم تاريخ الفكر نفسه، وقد آمنتْ به معظم الشعوب المتقدّمة، والأمم السالفة، وأنّ ظاهرة الموت والآندثار، لم يقبل بها العقل البشري، فوقف مُتأمِّلاً نهاية الجسد، وعجزه، وتساءل عن مصير القوة غير المنظورة التي كانت تمدّه بالحياة، وتمنحه الحيوية والنشاط، ولما كانت ظاهرة الموت غير مقتصرة على العنصر البشري فقط، وإنّما تطول عناصر كونيّة أخرى، فقد وجد الإنسان في عودة الروح إليها، سبباً يدفعه إلى الإعتقاد بالتقمّص، وإنتظار عودة الروح التي فارقتْ جسدها، وظهورها في جسد جديد.
هكذا غدت الروح أمراً جديراً بالإهتمام، فما هي؟ وما كان أصلها، وما مصيرها؟ هل هي خالدة ام فانية؟ هل هبطت من العالم الأثيري وحلّتْ في الجَسَد؟.
التقمّص قانون روحاني، يحتلّ مكانة مرموقة في الأدب الروحي، وهو إعتقاد قديم، عرفه المصريون القدماء، والفرس، واليونانيون، والرومانيون ووردت عنه عدّة إشارات في الكتب السماويّة المقدّسة.
من هنا كانت الدوافع التي حثت المؤلف على الخوض في هذا النوع من البحوث ومنها رغبته في سبر أغوار الإنسان، بغية جلاء غوامضه، وخفاياه، إذ أن هذا الموضوع يتناول الروح، وأصلها، ومصيرها، وخلودها، وموتها، وعودتها للتجسّد، فهو يلقي أضواء على تطوّر الإنسان وإرتقائه اللولبي الصاعد عبر سلسلة من الحيوات والميتات.
وهذه الدراسة تفسّر البعضَ من النواحي الغامضة في سلوك الإنسان وملكاته وألغازه، والتي كان علم النفس القديم يقف إزاءها في حيرة، وعجز، إزاء إصراره على حداثة الذاكرة الإنسانيّة، وهي توضح بالتالي بعض معالم الحدود بين الوعي واللاوعي، تلك الحدود التي طالما كانت أرضاً خصبة لصراع قد طال أمده بين مدارس علم النفس المختلفة، وهي تبيّن بطريقة وضعيّة قانون الكارما، أو قانون "السبب والنتيجة" وتساعد على تحديد الطريق الصحيح لمسيرة الإنسان في رحبات هذا الوجود الذي لا يُعرف له بداءة ولا نهاية.
