لقد عرفت الشعوب الطب ومارسته على اختلاف أزمنتها وأمكنتها، وبلغ عند بعضها شأناً رفيعاً تقدماً كبيراً كالطب الإغريقي، والفارسي، والهندي، على سبيل المثل... وأما الطب العربي في الجاهلية فكان على قسمين: 1-طب البادية. 2-طب الحضر.
هو في مجمله يتجه إلى تحليل الأمراض تحليلاً سطحياً رغم وجود أطباء اشتهروا وذاع صيتهم كأطباء جنديسابور مثلاً، إلا أن علاجه وطرق ثقافته لم ترق إلى إنسانية الطبيب فاستخدم الكهانة والتنجيم كوسيلة للعلاج.
ولقد كانت الحاجة ملحة جداً إلى طب جديد متطور، إنساني، ينظم أمور الطب ويتناول الأمراض كلها بالتشخيص والعلاج السليم حتى ظل إنساني خير، وكان هذا الطب الجديد والمنتظر هو طب القرآن الكريم، والسنة الشريفة، وبدأ العرب باستخدام الطب الإسلامي، ونبغ كثير من الأطباء في عصور الإسلام المختلفة حتى النهضة الأوروبية التي قامت حضارتها ونهضتها التراث العلمي العربي ومؤلفاته الطبية القيمة، وكذلك اشتهر بعض الأئمة بكتابة الأمور الطبية كالإمام السيوطي، والإمام ابن قيم الجوزية، والإمام علاء الدين الكحال، والإمام موفق الدين البغدادي، وابن سينا، والرازي، وابن رسول، وغيرهم.
ناهيك عن العلماء والأطباء المتخصصين في علم الطب الآتي ذكرهم بين جنبات هذا الكتاب الذي جاء على شكل معجم جمع أسماء الأطباء الذين نبغوا في عالم الطب بمختلف عصور الأمة العربية، كما وقدم ترجمة يسيرة عن حياتهم معتمداً على أهم مراجع كتب التراجم والسير والشخصيات، هذا إلى جانب هامش احتوى على شرح لجميع الكلمات العربية الغريبة للتيسير، وعلى تعريف بالأماكن والمدن.
