إن التجربة الواقعية التي يعيشها الشاعر بظروفها العامة والخاصة تتدخل كثيراً في توجهاته الشعرية وتوجهات جيله بأكمله، وديوان "لاهثاً، يبتلع الهواء!" الذي نحن بصدده كان له حظوة من هذا التأثير عبر نوعية الإختيارات الشعرية لمؤلفه الشاعر بدوي الحاج، الذي يبدو فيه هذا التفاعل بين القصيدة والواقع عامة والسياسي منه بوجه الخصوص، فهو مرآه للذات المعاصرة للشاعر الذي بدا وكأنه ينعي وطنه وهو في خضم الضياع والغربة بعيداً عن الوطن الذي وجدته هذه الذات / الشاعرة مستباحاً لكل قوى الشر فكان الواقع محفزاً لأبنائه على الرحيل والغربة.
في القصيدة المعنونة "أعظم الأبطال..." يقول الشاعر: "... أيها الحاقدون، ألم تتعبوا؟... إنه كُلُ موتٍ... كُلّ يَوْم... إنهُ كُلُ نهايةٍ، كُلُّ يَوْم... القتل لديكم هواية... لا عيب فيه ولا بداية... على باب مقهى... في باحة مدرسة... وإلى عابر سبيل... تعبثون بالدُّمَى... تحت كل سقف... وفي أحشاء كُلَّ بيت... تعبثون كما تشاؤون!...".
"لاهثاً... يبتلع الهواء!"... كتاب يحمل بين جذباته معاناة المشاعر التي تمخضت حبّاً وثورةً وحريةً بأسلوبه السهل الممتنع والعميق في آن معاً.
يضم الكتاب قصائد في الشعر العربي الحديث توزعت على أربعة عناوين رئيسة هي: 1-المرأة، 2-الروح، 3-الوطن، 4-نثريات.
