المنظومة البيقونية هي من المنظومات النافعة التي كتب الله لها القَبول عند العلماء وطلبة العلم ، فعظم وقعها وعم نفعها جميع الأقطار والأمصار ؛ لما اشتملت عليه من أقسام الحديث والأخبار ، وهي سهلة ميسرة لأهل الفهوم والعقول . وهذا السِّفر هو شرح لهذه المنظومة ، وهو شرح لطيف موجز ، بعبارة عذبة سلسة ، وهذا من توفيق الله سبحانه . ومؤلف الكتاب هو سيوطي عصره ؛ فقد أكرمه الله تعالى بعلم وتواضع وقلم سيَّال في علوم شتى ، ومن طالع مؤلفاته وكثرتها . . ظنه من عصر السلف الصالح . شرح في هذا الكتاب تلك المنظومة في أنواع الحديث مع الأمثلة الموضحة ، ثم أعرب الأبيات آخر كل بحث ؛ ليتمرن الطالب على ذلك ، واستفتح البحوث بأسئلة لشد الانتباه . فغدا هذا الكتاب محط أنظار طلاب الحديث ؛ ليكون من اللبنات الأولى فيه ، وقد قال في مقدمة شرحه : ( فإني لما رأيت « المنظومة البيقونية » قد عظم وقعها وعم نفعها . . . سنح لي في ذهني القاصر ، وفهمي السقيم الفاتر أن أتطفل عليها بوضع شرح عليها ، يُحلِّل عقد معانيها ، ويفكك جمل مبانيها ، ليس بالقصير المخل ، ولا بالطويل الممل ، بل له بينهما الحلول والمحل ، يكون مناسباً حال أهل الزمان . . . وقد جعلت في مبدأ كل قسم من أقسام الحديث أسئلة وأجوبة تتعلق به ، لا بد من حفظها لكل من له رغبة في هذا الفن ) .
