هذا جزء فيه تراجم جماعة وصفوا بالحفظ ذيلت به على ذيلي الحافظين الجليلين جلال الدين عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكر السيوطي، وتقي الدين ابن فهد المكي.
وخطت المؤلف هي ألا يذكر أحداً من الذين وصفوا بالحفظ إلا من حافظ مثله أو كان قريباً من هذا الوصف وكان له معرفة بالفن، إذ أن لكل فن رجاله، وقد قال الحافظ السخاوي في الجواهر والدرر وأعلم أنه ينبغي أن لا يقبل الوصف بذلك (أي الحفظ) إلا من موصوف به، فرب من يسرد كثيراً من الأنساب والمتون ممن هو قاصر في تخريج الحديث، وتمييز صحيحه وسقيمه، ومعرفة علله مع قصور عبارته، وجمود فهمه، عند من لا تمييز له، فيصفه بذلك ظناً منه أن ذلك بمجرده كاف وهذه غفلة، إنما الحفظ المعرفة، هذا إن حصل الوثوق به فيما يسرده مما لا يعلمه إلا النقاد فأما إذا لم يكن كذلك فتلك الطامة...
لذلك أعرض عن ذكر عدد كبير وصفوا بهذا الوصف ممن أجلوهم وأكبروهم أو تساهلوا معهم وذلك لعدم تحقق الصفة في الموصوف وذلك بحث والتتبع.
وقد رتب التراجم التي سلك فيها طريقه الإيجاز والإطناب لتناسب غرضه، حسب وفيات أصحابها وقدمه بفوائد في فصول وسميته: "تزيين الألفاظ بتتميم ذيول تذكرة الحفاظ".
