تلازم كتاب "شعوب وتقاليد" صفتان أنه مفيد ومشوق. مفيد لأن الباحث جمع فصوله من حدائق مختلفة بالتقاليد والعادات مما يزيد من معرفة القارئ بشعوب العالم، ومشوق لأنه موضوع بأسلوب فيه سهولة؛ ومن ثم فإنه يقرأ بيسر، وعباراته ميسرة لذلك فإنه يقرأ بمتعة.
ما نراه اليوم ونحن في الهزيع الأخير من القرن العشرين الذي كان قرن اكتشافات علمية وتكنولوجية هائلة ليس إلا تتويجاً لمئات القرون من الحياة البدائية التي عاشها الإنسان على هذا الكوكب.
والحضارات التي نراها اليوم في قمة تألقها كانت في فترة معينة من التاريخ الإنساني تعيش أسوأ درجات التخلف والانحطاط، والعكس يصحّ على الحضارات التي نراها في يومنا هذا في أسفل درجات السلم الحضاري.
والكتاب، إلى ذلك، رحلة استكشاف في تقاليد الشعوب وأديانها وحياتها الاجتماعية والثقافية وعلى كل صعيد لأن التاريخ البشري هو حركة متصلة منذ الوعي الأول للإنسان وحتى اليوم.
