كان فخر الدين سياسيّا داهية، فقد استطاع أن يمد إمارته لتشمل معظم سوريا الكبرى، ويحصل على اعتراف الدولة العثمانية بسيادته على كل هذه الأراضي، على الرغم من أن الدولة في ذلك الوقت كانت لا تزال في ذروة مجدها وقوتها ولم تكن لترضى بأي والٍ أو أمير ليُظهر أي محاولة توسع أو استقلال أو ما يُشابه ذلك. تحالف فخر الدين خلال عهده مع دوقية توسكانا ومع أسبانيا، وازدهرت البلاد طيلة أيامه وكثرت فيها أعمال التجارة مع أوروبا والدول المجاورة، وعاش الناس في رخاء وراحة، إلى أن عادالسلطان العثماني مراد الرابع ليرى بأن فخر الدين يُشكل خطرا على السلطنة بعد أن ازدادت سلطته وذاع صيته في أرجاء الدولة وتحالف مع أوروبا، فأرسل حملة عسكرية تمكنت من القبض على الأمير وإرساله إلى إسطنبول حيث أعدم.
