منذ زمن بعيد, في جزء من مجرى نهر العاصي السوري, سمحت خصائص النهر باعتماد ناعورة المجرى, وهي أكثر الآلات المائية أناقة, بتأمين مجمل الحاجات الى الماء. في مدينة حماة, يوالي معلمون حرفيون, اليوم, كما في الماضي, تأمين الصيانة والإصلاح وإعادة التركيب. وهم وحدهم المؤتمنون على إتقان عمل توارثوه عبر الأجيال داخل حرفتهم العتيدة. النواعير القائمة اليوم على العاصي هي نتاج متطور جداً لتكنولوجيا حافظ عليها كما هي, وذات أداء مذهل: فالوحدات الكبرى من هذه النواعير تحمل المياه الى مستوى يرتفع حتى العشرين متراً فوق النهر, وتصرف ما يقرب من خمسين ليتراً في الثانية. كل واحدة من هذه الآلات يمكن لها أن تروي مساحة من البساتين تصل الى 75هكتار. انطلاقاً من تحرٍّ استغرق وقتاً طويلاً لدى معلمي الحرفة وورشاتهم, خلال أعمال الإصلاح وإعادة التركيب, بالدرجة الأولى, يستعرض هذا الكتاب العملية الكاملة لصنع هذه النواعير, ويحلل كلاً من العناصر الداخلة في تركيبها. كل المواضيع التي تناولتها هذه الصفحات مدعمة بعدد كبير من الرسوم والمخططات والصور.
