لم يكن غريغوريوس مؤسساً للمشاريع ومشترعاً رهبانياً كأخيه باسيليوس، ولم يكن خطيباً شهيراً كالذهبي الفم وشاعراً كغريغوريوس النزينزي، لكنه فاقهم كلاهوتيّ نظري ومتصوف. ولد غريغوريوس نحو 335 وتربى على يد أخيه البكر باسيليوس، لهذا يدعوه، مراراً معلمه. بعد أن قبل درجة القارئ قرّر اتباع السلك المدني وأصبح أستاذاً للبلاغة، وتزوج، ولكنه لم يلبث تحت تأثير أخيه الأكبر وصديقه النزينزي، أن اعتنق الحياة الرهبانية.
في خريف 371 عُين مطراناً على كرسي ينص من متروبوليتية قيصرية التابعة لأخيه باسيليوس. قبل الأسقفية، مرغماً. والتحق بأبرشيته. لاقى غريغوريوس معارضة قوية من قبل الهراطقة الآريوسيين، وعُزل من منصبه ولم يعد إليه إلاّ بعد وفاة الإمبراطور الآريوسي فالنس (378). وفي عام 381 لعب دوراً هاماً في مجمع القسطنطينية المسكوني الثاني إلى جانب النزينزي. تردد على العاصمة مراراً وخصوصاً لتأبي الإمبراطورية فلاكسيلا. زار العاصمة للمرة الأخيرة سنة 394 بمناسبة اجتماع السينودس، وتوفي، على الأرجح، في السنة ذاتها، مخلفاً عدداً كبيراً من المؤلفات في العقيدة وأخرى من شرح الكتاب المقدس والنسكيات وخطب ومواعظ متنوعة وقد عرف بعمق التفكير وقوّته.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يهتم بشرح نظرية غريغوريوس في اللاهوت التصوفي حيث يفند أهم آراءه في بنية النفس والأهواء النور أو التطهير، الفردوس المستعاد، التجلّي، معرفة الله، الاختبار الصوفي، الحب الانخطافي... وذلك بالاعتماد على ما كتبه في مؤلفاته الصوفية عامة وكتاب نشيد الأناشيد خاصة.
