إن باسيليوس، الذي يحمل بين الآباء اليونانيين لقب كبير، تدعوه الكتب الليتورجية البيزنطية "نور التقوى" و"منارة الكنيسة". فقد أنارها بطهارة حياته التي لا تقل عن سموّ تعليمه، فإن تعليم القديسين الأول والأعظم هو مثال حياتهم. وُدلد باسيليوس في عائلة قدّسين، ونعم بتربية خاصة بقرب أكثر المعلمين شهرة في القسطنطينية وأثينا. إنما اتّضح له أن حياته ابتدأت حقيقة عندما أعطي أن يتعرّف معرفة كاملة وفعّالة إلى المسيح كسيّد له، وهكذا قرر اتباعه طامعاً في التشبه به دون سواه، ومحدقاً إليه فقط، واعتبره سيده، وملكه، وطبيبه... وبدون أي تردّد، هجر الدروس التي أحبها، وقرر خدمة المسيح والتعرف عليه من خلال تعاليمه.
عن هذا القديس الكبير يتحدث الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي يضمّ أبحاثاً كتبت في مجلتي "الوحدة والإيمان" و"المسرة الغرّاء" وتناولت سيرة هذا القديس، ومواعظه، فتحرت ولادته، شهرته، انخراطه في الكهنوت، إيمانه، تعاليمه وروحانيته، آثاره في إصلاح الرهبانية، وسه لقوانينها الجديدة، أفكاره الاجتماعية (نظرته إلى الزواج، نظرته إلى الحياة الاجتماعية، نظرته إلى الإنسان، نظرته إلى الغنى والعمل، أفكاره الوعظية...)، مؤلفاته ورسائله، كلامه عن الأفخارستيا... كما وفي هذا الكتاب بحث خاص سرد أسماء المخطوطات العربية الباسيلية وبعض أسماء مترجميها ومصادرها وأماكن حفظها. كما وفيه نماذج من كتابات وعظية خطها القديس باسيليوس، وأخرى في العقيدة المسيحية والنظام الكنسي.
