سعى "نزيه حماد" إلى تدوين هذه الدراسة عن عقد السلم نظراً لأهمية هذه المعاقدة ودورها البارز في التعامل المالي بين المسلمين، باعتبارها لوناً من المداينة، نشأ عن عقد معارضة، غرضه الاسترواح والاكتساب من جانب المشتري (رب السلم)، وباعثه الحصول على المال المعجل ثمناً للمنيع الموصوف في الذمة من جانب البائع (المسلم إليه)، ليتسنى له استعماله والتصرف فيه وقت حاجته إليه، وبذلك ينتفع كل من البائع والمشتري به، ويرتفع الحرج عنهم بالإقدام عليه. ومن هنا قال الفقهاء: إن الله سبحانه شرع هذا العقد رفقاً بعباده ورفعاً للحرج عنهم وتيسيراً عليهم وتخفيفاً عنهم.
ولأن هذا العقد كما كان بالغ الأهمية كباب من المداينات في العصور التي خلت والأزمنة التي سلفت، فإنه يعد في عصرنا الراهن أداة ذات كفاءة عالية لنشاطات المصارف الإسلامية، من حيث مرونتها واستجابتها لحاجات التمويل المختلفة، سواءً أكان تمويلاً قصير الأجل أم متوسطه أو طويله، واستجابتها لحاجات شرائح مختلفة ومتعددة من العملاء، سواء أكانوا من المنتجين الزراعيين أو الصناعيين أو المقاولين أم من التجار، واستجابتها لتمويل نفقات التشغيل والنفقات الرأسمالية الأخرى.
