فإذا كانت هذه هي الوظائف الرئيسة للغات بعامة، فإن للغة العربية شأناً آخر يزيدها أهمية وخطورة؛ نظراً إلى أنها لغة القرآن، يقول تعالى: [إنّا أنزلناه قرآناً عربياً لعلّكم تعقلون] ، ولغة الفصاحة والإعجاز والبلاغة، فضلاً عن أنها تحمل السّنة النبوية الشريفة، وفقه العلماء، وحضارة الأمة وتاريخها وأمجادها وثقافتها ...
وبناءً على أهمية اللغة في كل المجالات، جاء هذا الكتاب بعنوان: "أبجديات اللغة وعلم الأصوات واللسانيات"؛ ليلبي حاجة الدارسين في التعرف إلى اللغة، ولا سيما علم اللغة الحديث (الألسنية) ... وما يتفرع عنه من علم الأصوات وغيره ...
وبناءً عليه، يتناول هذا الكتاب ثلاثة فصول؛ الأول بعنوان: اللغة: تعريفها وخصائصها ... ونموها. أما الفصل الثاني فجاء بعنوان: "ماهية علم الأصوات ومجالاته ...". ويركز الفصل الثالث على الألسنية: تعريفها، وجذورها، واتجاهاتها ومفاهيمها.
