في الرابع من شهر رجب عام 758هـ عقدت العائلات البيروتية السبعة اتفاقاً مع والي الساحل الشامي سودون الأول المملوكي، ينص على حمايةْ لثغور المدينة وشواطئها. وتعهدوا بإقامة معسكرات لهم خارج أسوار بيروت مقابل ما يتلقونه من أموال تدفع لهم من جابيات الخزانة الخاصة بمدن الساحل الشامي المملوكية. لكن هذا التحالف انهار بعد أن سيطر الأمير فخر الدين المعني الأيوبي الثاني على ثغور المدينة سنة 1598 قبل أن يدحره والي دمشق أحمد لوتشك فتعود الأسر البيروتية السبعة إلى لعب دورها في حماية البلدة القديمة وسواحلها الشمالية والجنوبية.
وهذه الأسر السبعة هم البازارباشييون الدواكه "آل داعوق حالياً"، الوطسنيون المريّون المنامنة "آل منيمنة حالياً"، التومرتيون الثبتيون السنانوه "آل سنو حالياً"، الهذيانيون الروادنيون الكريديين "آل كريدية حالياً"، الادرغاليون النقارسة العيتانة "آل عيتاني"، المالقوجيون البلاقنة الدواغنه، الرتقانيون الركاوتة؛ والتي تفرعت منها العديد من الأسر بيروتية التي يستعرضها المؤلف في هذا الكتاب.
