في القرن الثاني بعد الميلاد، كانت الفوضى تعمّ أرجاء الهند في أمر الدين والفلسفة، إذ ضاعت المقرونة بالاختبار المباشر. برزت الشيع بعد الشيع وتزايد عدد الديانات ونشبت الخلافات بينها وكان قتال. ويعود الفضل إلى شنكر مؤلف هذا الكتاب في إعادة وحفظ وهج شمس الحكمة الفيدية والأبنشدية في الهند وإلغاء الخلافات والظلام منها. ومع أن القوى المعارضة لهذه الحكمة كانت كثيرة وقوية في تلك الأيام، تمكن شنكر بمفرده من التغلب عليها وإعادة الحكمة الفيدية والفيدانت اللاثنائي إلى الصفاء الأصلي. كانت بذور الإلحاد تعمل تقريباً في أفكار الجميع لذا كان لا بد من محاربة الجهل بسلاح المعرفة والتطهير الذاتي. هذا السلاح مع طريقة استخدامه أوجده شنكر بولادته في طبقة البراهمة وبدخوله المبكر في حياة النسك. ومن أهم أعماله الشعرية والنثرية التي تدور حول اللاثنائية هو كتاب "معرفة الذات"ا لذي نظم فيه أنشودته الشهيرة في معرفة الذات والذي ضمّنها حكماً روحية ووجهها إلى التواقين للخلاص، والناعمين بالسلام، الذين تحرروا من الأهواء وقضوا على خطاياهم عن طريق التقشفات.
