أصل التصحيف أن يأخذ الرجل اللفظ من قراءته في صحيفة، ولم يكن سمعه فيغيره عن الصواب. ويقع التصحيف عند العلماء من القراء والمحدثين في القرآن والحديث والأدب والشعر، وهو فن مهم جليل عند المحدثين. يكون تصحيف لفظ، وتصحيف معني، ويكون في الإسناد والمتن. وفائدة معرفة هذا الفن هو صيانة القرآن والحديث واللغة والأدب والشعر في التصحيف والتحريف. والقراء اقل تصحيفاً من غيرهم لأنهم يأخذون القرآن من أفواه الرجال.
كان لعلماء الحديث الأسبقية في التصنيف لحفظ سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من التحريف والتبديل وأول من ألف فيه من هؤلاء العلماء كان الحافظ أبو احمد الحسن بن عبد الله العسكري الذي عني بهذا العلم فوضع كتابه هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته والذي شرح فيه الأسماء والألفاظ المشكلة التي تتشابه في صورة الخط فيقع فيها التصحيف، مختصراً إياه من الكتاب الكبير الذي كان قد ضمنه سائر ما يقع فيه التصحيف. ولزيادة الفائدة عمد المصنف إلى بدئه بمقدمة عرف فيها معنى التصحيف في اللغة وعند أهل الحديث، وفائدة معرفة هذا الفن الجليل ومن صنف فيه من العلماء.
