وعندما غلا مرجل الحنين للوطن في نفس سليم، وفاض الكيل بهذه المشاعر لم يتمالك نفسه من السير على قدميه في شارع رأس العين غرباً، نفس الشارع الذي تعبره الحافلات في طريقها من عمان إلى القدس، والذي اعتاد سليم المرور به خلال سفراته القليلة بين المدينتين قبل الهزيمة القاصمة.
قطع في مشيه عدة كيلومترات وهو يردد بينه وبين نفسه: "نحوك يا قدس أسير، أنت حياتي ولا حياة لي إلا بك"، وظل يمشي حتى أنهكه التعب، ثم أقفل راجعاً وقد سالت الدموع من عينيه، لكن الإحباط والعجز ملأ عليه خلجات نفسه، وزاد شعوره بالقهر والحرمان كما لم يمر به طيلة سنوات عمره.
