واحد من مشاهير الفلاسفة المسيحيين الألمان في القرن العشرين. درس الفلسفة في كلية اللاهوت الكاثوليكية بجامعة مونستر مدة تزيد على أربعين سنة. وكانت محاضراته تجذب العدد الكبير من الطالبات والطلاب، كما شهدت ذلك بنفسي عشرات السنين في مونستر. درس أيضاً في جامعات أخرى عن دعوة منها في ألمانيا وفي خارج ألمانيا (منها إسبانيا، والهند، والولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وكندا)، كما دعي لإلقاء محاضرات في كثير من بلدان العالم.
كان فكره منفتحاً على التيارات الفلسفية الحديثة، يتفحصها ويناقش مواقفها وبراهينها. أما هو نفسه فقد تأثر قبل كل شيء بمؤلفات اللاهوتي الكبير توما الأكويني، فحاول بنجاح مرموق أن يوفق بين فكر الأكويني والمسائل المطروحة على الفكر المعاصر.
لائحة مؤلفاته طويلة جداً. وقد نقل العديد منها إلى مختلف لغات العالم. وله مقالات كثيرة متنوعة نشر بعضها في المجلات المتخصصة، وبعضها في المجلات المعروضة على المثقفين غير الاختصاصيين.
