ترغب نجلا بطلة العمل روايته، أن تخبر الجميع عن آرائها، لكن ضخامة صدرها تمنعها، ما إن تبدأ بالحديث حتى تشعر أن ثدييها نهضا وأخرساها، ترفع صوتها أكثر فينتصبان أكثر، تزيد في حدته فيزيدان في التضخم، وتدخل بصوتها في مبارزة معهما، حتى تلمس إستغراب مستمعها هذا الصياح، عندها تستسلم تماماً، وتصمت هارية إلى داخلها.
نجلا حفيدة حياة التي كانت شيخة الحارة القديمة، وعلّمت الأولاد قراءة القرآن، شُعفِتْ بمدينتها، تبدو حماه في خريطتها كإجاصة مقضومة.
تحاول تجريب نصائح لينا، القادمة من أمريكا، فلكي تتخلص من حب فاشل، تجرّب عيش العلاقات كما تفعل لينا، تراقب شخصيات رجال يمرّون في واقعها اليومي، وتسرد أخبارهم وطبائعهم، من خلال صراعها الذي تكابده في محاولة الحب الجديد والتخلص من همها الأساسي، ظاهر وأمها وجمال المدينة البائد.
خليل المتهم بهوى الصبيان، وعماد خريج السجون والذي تراه عارياً وهو مستلق في غرفة نوم لينا بينما لينا تحت الدوش ساهبة تماماً عن زوجها الذي يشتغل في الكويت... "أكبر أفندي" لقب الإقطاعي الذي لم يبق من عزه القديم إلا ركناً صغيراً عند مصطبة على العاصي، والشاعر سمير الذي يرجوها أن تسمح له بوضع رأسه على صدرها.
وحين فشلت في تعويض حبها، راحت تعزي نفسها بأسى بالغ: "أنا نجلا ست الكل... لو عاشت ستي حياة أكثر لنادتني بهذا اللقب".
ذكريات وأسف، أحلام وخيبات، صراع مثل أمل سيزيف في الوصول إلى الهدف، وترجع نجلا من جديد لتحكي عن تعب ظهرها من حمل صدرها.
