يضم الكتاب الصور التي تعبر عن كبريات أحداث لبنان في القرن العشرين وذلك بالاعتماد على بعض المصادر التاريخية والجغرافية على الصور فالبنسبة للمصادر التاريخية فقد اعتمد على التسلسل الزمني سنة بسنة مع الاحتفاظ بهامش من الحرية داخل السنة ذاتها لوصل ما يجب وصله. والمصادر الجغرافية فقد راعى من خلالها بمع المناطق اللبنانية كافة. وقد أخذ الكتاب بعين الاعتبار الميادين السياسية والثقافية والاقتصادية.
ففي الوجه السياسي حاول المؤلفون إدراج كل من السلطة بوجهيها الحاكم والمعارض، والحركات الشعبية الرافضة في هذا الصعيد والمؤسسات ذات العمل المنتظم وما كان يستجد بفعل التطور التاريخي الخلاق والهدام في آن.
وفي الوجه الثقافي أولى المؤلفون الاهتمام بالفنون كلها من الموسيقى إلى الأدب مروراً بالرسم والنحت والهندسة المعمارية والمسرح والسينما، إلى جانب التربية والصحافة وتحرر المرأة والرسائل الفكرية، وأظهر ما كان للبنان الإبداع، عموماً، وما كان لبيروت خصوصاً من حيث هي نقطة لقاء وعبور وإشعاع عربياً ودولياً.
