يبدو من خلال استعراض هذا الكتاب لمواقف النحاة الموصليين من كلام العرب أنهم اقتربوا من منهج الكوفيين في السماع, فقد أخذ ابن جني في النصف الثاني من القرن الرابع الهجري عن الأعراب الذين توطنوا أطراف الموصل, وجوّز الاحتجاج بشعر المولدين والمحدثين في المعنى, وتابعه نحاة الموصل في ذلك, وزادوا عليه بتجويز الاحتجاج به في الألفاظ.
في هذا البحث حاولت إستجلاء غوامض درس، بقيت حبيسة مظانها طوال قرون، ولم يستخرج من أعماقه إلا بعض لآلئه، فآثرت أن أنظم عقدها المنفرط، غير عابئ بما إعترضني من شحة المصادر. إرتأيت أن أقسم بحثي على تمهيد، وأربعة فصول، وخاتمة. تناولت في التمهيد، الموصل تسمية، وتاريخاً، وبدايات الدراسات النحوية في الأمصار، والموصل منها. وفي الفصل الأول تكلمت عن المذاهب النحوية، وآراء القدماء والمحدثين فيها، وخصائص كل منها، لمعرفة النهج الذي سلكه الدرس، ودلالة بعض المصطلحات، نحو (المذهب ) و ( البغدادين ). وعني الفصل الثاني بموقفهم من القرآن والقراءات، والحديث، وكلام العرب من النثر والشعر، وأصول النحو الأخرى، والتعليل والعوامل، ودلالة الإعراب عند علمائه. وترجمت في الفصل الثالث لأبرز رجال الدرس، ففيه خلق كثير، مثبتاً للبعض منهم آراءهم الإنفرادية التي وقفت عليها. أما الفصل الرابع فقد عرجت فيه على دراسة الحروف، وتحقيق نسبة ( جواهر الأدب في معرفة كلام العرب ) المنسوب خطأً إلى علاء الدين بن علي الإربلي، والدراسات الصوتية والصرفية، فرضت ذلك وحدة البحث، وخصائص الدرس الأخرى، وتبيان أثرهم في الدراسات النحوية وعلماء البيئات الأخرى. وأجملت في الخاتمة أهم النتائج التي توصلت إليها في البحث.
