هذا الكتاب هو ذاكرة لمدينة بيروت، وهو أيضاً دراسة تراثية لأسماء معالمها الشهيرة.. فهو بذلك ضرب من علم الآثار، على ضرب من التاريخ والجغرافية، لأن أسماء الأماكن والمعالم هي في الحقيقة آثار وتاريخ وجغرافية... وقد يزول المكان، ويندرس المعلم، ولكن الاسم يبقى وكأنه قطعة تاريخية لها ما للآثار من قيمة ودلالة.
وأبرز ما في الكتاب، تصحيحه الأخطاء التي وقع بها بعض المؤرخون والباحثين في كثير من أسماء المواضيع التاريخية لمدينة بيروت، ومعالم مسمياتها وحدود مواقعها الحقيقية..
ومن خلال آلاف الوثائق التي نظمتها محكمة بيروت الشرعية، ورجعت إليها بالتحقيق والتدقيق، أمطت اللثام للمرة الأولى عن تاريخ مواضع في بيروت، ودلالات أسمائها وأسماء غيرها، منها: البليدة (ميناء الحسن-الحصن) التي ذكرها المؤرخ صالح بن يحيى المتوفى سنة (1446م)، ومنها: الطينة (بطينة) ودير (دار-عين) المريسة، والبسطة، والعمارة والسنطية، والفشخة،وأرض الخميس، والآتونات، ومغارة القنطاري، ومحلة الدراقن وقهوة خبيني، وجميزة يمين، وخروبة التنير وغيرها...
وقد تضمن الكتاب ذكراً مستفيضاً لعائلات بيروت.. فضلاً عن الوصف المفصل لعناصر البيت البيروتي، وميزاته كالإيوان والتقيسة والمدخل المنكسر (الباشورة) والعتبة والمنزول الملحق به.
وينشر الكتاب للمرة الأولى وثيقة فريدة، هي حكم شرعي نظم سنة (1850م) بشكل أرجوزة شعرية، وذلك لمبايعة دكان في ساحة الخبز أمام البركة إضافة إلى عشرات الصور والوثائق التاريخية النادرة...
فالكتاب في جملته إذن ذاكرة بيروت وأهل بيروت...
