إن علم البيئة يتسع ويتشعب باستعمال التقنيات، والدراسات المختلفة في مجالات علمية متعددة، حيث أصبحت له جذور في علم الديموغرافيا، والفيزيولوجيا وعلم العادات، وعلم التغيرات والظواهر الجوية، وعلم المناخ، وعلم المحيطات، وعلم المياه، وعلم الكيمياء الحياتية والكيمياء العضوية وغيرها. وهدف علم البيئة هو إظهار الخصائص الأساسية للعوامل الحياتية وعلاقتها بهذه المجالات.

ومما تناوله المؤلف المواضيع التالية: الجهود المبذولة عالمياً للمحافظة على البيئة، تلوث الهواء، تلوث الماء، فوائد الغابات، الأخطار التي تهدد الغابات، إعادة تكوين الغابات العربية، الإنسان والبيئة، المحافظة على الحيوان والنبات، بعض ما يضرّ بالحياة الحيوانية والنباتية، التنمية الزراعية والبيئية، التنمية الصناعية والبيئية، دور الإعلام في المحافظة على البيئة، بعض المؤسسات التي تهتم بالبيئة، بعض الباحثين المشهورين في علم البيئة، بعض المجلات العالمية المشهورة التي تهتم بشؤون البيئة.
