في مطلع الستينات انطلقت حركة تجديد في الشعر الشعبي العراقي مثيلة لحركة التجديد التي شهدها الشعر العربي في الأربعينات, على يد السياب والبياتي ونازك وآخرين. وكانت قصيدة مظفر النواب (للريل وحمد) العلامة الأولى والأساسية في تلك الحركة التي راكمها النواب بنتاجه الغزير والمتفرد وظل رائدها الأول. وفي نهاية الستينات, أخذت حركة التجديد تتسع وتتكرس فنياً وتثبت حضورها على الساحة الثقافية والشعرية العراقية, بوصفها نتاجاً لمناخات التطور والصراع الاجتماعي والسياسي في العراق, الذي كان أفرز أيضاً ظواهر تجديد ثقافية أخرى متنوعة ومتقدمة في ميادين الفكر والأدب والفن. وكان من أهم القصائد التي تناولها المؤلف في كتابه: بغداشام, من دفاتر العشك, عمر من خشب, يا بحر, سحابه, وين أوديك, عطر الغايب, الفراشة والطفل, نايم وطولك صحو, مو بحر, المربع, وردة الثوب, النواقيس, المسافر, الروح والطين, شذرات.
