تدخل الترب الليبية في نطاق ترب المناطق الجافة من العالم، والتي تتميّز بقلة أو ندرة تساقط الأمطار والتي بدورها تؤدي إلى قلة الغطاء النباتي أو إنعدامه، وبالرغم من تباين الترب الليبية بوجه خاص في تكوينها ونشأتها، وبالتالي في سلوكها وخواصها، وذلك حسب عوامل وعمليات التكوين السائدة فيها محلياً، إلا أنها قد تتشابه في الكثير من خواصها بصفة عامة مع ترب المناطق الجافة الأخرى.
ومن هنا، تظهر أهمية التعرف، على ترب المناطق الجافة التي تعتبر الترب الليبية جزءاً منها، والتي تتميز بخصائص خاصة تميّزها عن بقية ترب البيئات المناخية الأخرى في العالم، وذلك حتى يسهل على المهتمين بشؤون الترب الليبية (طلبة - مهندسين زراعيين - مختصين) تفهّم التشابه والإختلاف بين الترب الليبية وترب المناطق الجافة الأخرى من العالم، بغرض تطبيق السبل والتدابير التي نجحت في حل مشكلة ما في ترب بلد آخر، أو تجنّب تجربة فاشلة في إدارة تربة معيّنة في منطقة معلومة على نفس نوعية التربة في ليبيا.
