إن شعر السلف الصالح ليس مجرد ألفاظ مسبوكة في بوتقة النظم، أو كلمات منضّدة على أسلاك القريض فحسب، بل هي محتوى لأبحاث راقية في المعارف من علمي الكتاب والسنة، ودروس عالية من الفلسفة والعبر والموعظة الحسنة والأخلاق، أضف إليها ما فيه من فنون الأدب ومواد اللغة ومباني التاريخ، فالشعر الحافل بهذه النواحي بغية العالم، ومقصد الحكيم، ومأرب الأخلاقي، وطلبة الأديب، وأمنية المؤرخ، وقل: مرمى المجتمع البشري أجمع.
وهناك للشعر المذهبي مآرب أخرى هي من أهم ما نجده من شعر السلف، ألا وهي الحجاج في المذهب والدعوة إلى الحق، وبث فضائل آل الله، ونشر روحيّات العترة الطاهرة في المجتمع، بصورة خلابة، وأسلوب بديع يمازج الأرواح، ويخالط الأدمغة.
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليضم شعراً منتخباً من كتاب الغدير. وجلّ القصد منه إرداف حديث النبأ العظيم في غدير بتراجم شعراء الغدير وشعرهم فيه لإثبات شهرة الحديث وتواتره في كل جيل، وأنه من أظهر ما اشتهر في هذا المجال نظماً ونثراً. حيث تطرق الكثير من الشعراء إلى ذكر واقعه (غدير خم) منذ لحظاتها الأولى. وبذلك خلد الشعراء ذلك (الإبلاغ) في مئات القصائد والمقطوعات. وقد عمد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى انتقاء مختارات لقصائد في مديح الإمام عليّ رضي الله عنه والتي تمتد من القرن الأول حتى قرننا هذا، وقد تم اختيارها من موسوعة علمية نادرة، هي موسوعة الغدير لمؤلفها الشيخ عبد الحسين أحمد الأميني النجفي. وهذه الموسوعة هي بحث علمي وتحقيق نادر حول مسألة من أهم مسائل التاريخ البشري بصورة عامة والتاريخ الإسلامي بصورة خاصة، وهو موضوع الإمامة والخلافة والولاية بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
