هذا كتاب ألفه مصنفه وهو "أبو محمد عبد الله بن أبي زيد القيرواني" (310/911-386/996)، في مواضيع مختلفة ومتنوعة، إلا أن هذا لا يعني أنه ينتمي إلى كتب الأدب بالمعنى الحافظي للكلمة، فذاك فن له خصائصه ومسالكه ومناهجه ومواده وأهدافه، وإنما كتابنا الذي نقدمه هو مؤلف جامع له مكان بين عدد كبير من المصنفات نعتها أصحابها بالجامع، استقت مادتها من الأحاديث النبوية وآثار الصحابة وكبار الأئمة وصوبت وجهتها نحو تمكين المسلم من كل ما يحتاج إليه لتصحيح عقيدته وتقويم سلوكه الأخلاقي والاجتماعي واحتلت مكانها بين العبادات والمعاملات والعادات واختارت منهجها في التوفيق بين القول والفعل فاعتمدت كتب الحديث والأثر كما اعتمدت كتب المغازي والسير. ولقد أحسن مؤلفنا عندما عنون كتابه: كتاب الجامع في السنن والآداب والحكم والمغازي والتاريخ وغير ذلك. وبما أن ابن أبي زيد مالكي من أئمة المالكية متحمس لمذهبه متمسك بتعاليم إمامه قد جند نفسه للدفاع عن مالك وأقواله، إن بالجدل والذب أو بالتحليل والاستشهاد نظراً للفضاء السياسي والديني الذي عاش فيه والذي سنصف خصائصه بعد حين، فقد استحسن أن يلحق بالعنوان الرئيسي السابق هذا العنوان الثانوي: مختصر من السماعات من مالك ومن الموطأ وغيره من الكتب مضاف إلى مختصر المدونة.
ثم إن هذا الجامع ينتمي إلى فن آخر له قواعده ومناهجه وأغراضه وهو المتمثل في كتب الحوادث والبدع. ونحن نعلم أن مادتها قد توفرت في العديد من كتب الملل والنحل والفرق وكذلك كتب العقائد أو المعتقدات وأيضاً في كتب الأخلاق ثم الحسبة بل حتى كتب الأحكام، إلا أنها تركزت في كتب خاصة بها سميت بكتب الحوادث والبدع. وهو فن سبق إلى التأليف فيه مؤلفنا ابن وضاح (287-900) كما لحقه فيه الطرطوشي (520-1126) وغيره وهم كثر.
