يتناول هذا الكتاب، لمؤلفه الفيزيائي النظري السوفييتي ف.باراشينكوف، أعرف ما في الفيزياء المعاصرة وهي الصلة غير المتوقعة بين عالم الأجسام الكبيرة، أي عالم المجرات والنجوم والكواكب، وعالم الأجسام المتناهية في صغرها والتي لا يمكن رؤيتها بأي مكروسكوب.
ويبحث المؤلف في هذا الكتاب بأسلوب علمي مبسط كيف تطور الكون الذي نعيش فيه ومن أي شيء يتركب وما هي صفاته، ويتحدث عن الجسيمات الأولية الغريبة المدهشة كالكواركات والهكسونات والتخيونات وغيرها. وعن الثقوب السوداء والجسيمات المتناهية الصغر التي تحوي في داخلها أكواناً كاملة.
كما يتطرق إلى الجديد بصدد المادة المضادة والشحنات المغناطيسية (المونوبولات) والفراغ وإلى نظرة الفيزيائيين عن المكان والزمان ومسألة الطاقة والتناقضات الظاهرية العجيبة في نظرية النسبية.
