قليلة هي المصادر التي تبحث في تعيين مراقد ومدافن، ووفيات أبناء الأئمة، وأحفادهم وذرياتهم. وسبب ذلك أنهم تفرقوا في البلاد، وأصبح من الصعب معرفة أماكن دفنهم أو مواضع قبورهم.
والناس في هذه الأيام يشيرون فيما بينهم إلى بعض القبور ويطلقون عليها صفات وعناوين عامة مثل بنت الحسن أو بنات الحسن أو بنات الكاظم، دون أن يتوخوا الدقة في ذلك. كما أن بعض القبور تمّ تعيينها على أساس منامات أو مكاشفات خيالية عرضت لبعض الأشخاص.
ولأجل تحقيق مدى صحة هذه الرموز أو القبور وضبط ما يمكن ضبطه وتعيين من له مرقد، وتحديد محل وفاة وتاريخ كل واحد من أبناء الأئمة وأحفادهم وضع المؤلف هذه الموسوعة حيث اعتمد طريقة متابعة انتقال العلويين من دار الولادة إلى موضع الهجرة والاستيطان، فمن ورد بدفنه دليل سجله المؤلف ومن لم يرد له ذكر تابع أماكن هجرته.
والموسوعة تشتمل على المشاهد المنسوبة لأبناء الإمامين الحسن والحسين (عليهما السلام) وأحفادهما وآل عقيل وبني العباس بن عبد المطلب. وبدأ بأكثرهم انتشاراً في ربوع العالم الإسلامي وهم ذرية الإمام موسى بن جعفر الكاظم (عليه السلام).
والجزء الأول من الموسوعة مخصص للمشاهد والقبور المنسوبة للإمام موسى بن جعفر (عليه السلام)، بينما خصص الجزء الثاني للمشاهد والقبور المنسوبة للإمام الحسن بن علي (عليه السلام)، في حين خصص الجزء الثالث للمشاهد والقبور المنسوبة للإمام الحسين بن علي وبقية أبناء الإمام أمير المؤمنين علي من أمهات أخرى غير الزهراء (عليها السلام).
