أصل هذه القصة ما أخرجه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل في مسنده, قال: أخبرنا بهز, حدثنا حماد بن سلمة, أخبرنا اسحق بن عبد الله عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: (إن رجلاً حمل معه خمراً في سفينة يبيعه ومعه قرد. قال: فكان الرجل إذا باع الخمر شابه بالماء, ثم باعه. قال فأخذ القرد الكيس فصعد به فوق الدقل. قال: فجعل يطرح ديناراً في البحر وديناراً في السفينة حتى قسمه). وهذا دليل على أن الغش كبيرة منكرة وخلق ذميم وخصلة بغيضة ولا عجب أن الله يبغضها ويبغض فاعلها, ولا عجب أيضاً أن يبغضها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم, وكذلك المؤمنون, ولكن العجب أن القرود تكره الغش.
